Linen loss in general medical and surgical hospitals is a serious problem, resulting in unnecessary financial costs. Linen includes items such as bedding and gowns for patients (e.g., sheets and blankets); medical and surgical linens (e.g., towels); and staff linens (e.g., scrubs and uniforms). Laundry and linen management services seek to provide adequate clean linen to users based on qualified standards for timeliness and cleanliness. However, managing used hospital linen differs from managing linen for other institutions because hospital linens may be contaminated with secretions, blood, or excreta, and some have been worn by patients with transmissible infections (Peres et al., 2018). This means that poor linen management can pose a risk of the transfer of pathogens to hospital employees or patients, which can contribute to spreading infections. In this study, implementing linen management processes and procedures was identified as a potential solution to the problem of linen loss. Findings also revealed the use of barcoding and radio frequency identification (RFID) chips as critical strategies that can be used to address the problem of linen loss.
