This study argues that John Steinbeck's novel, East of Eden, introduces elements of Buddhist practice using the character Lee. Lee philosophically examines the Judeo-Christian understanding of the human condition and retranslates the Cain and Abel narrative to reflect his Eastern philosophic conception of meaning and purpose.
